Urban League, GRCC, GRPS & GVSU Present 3rd Annual African American Male Achievement Conference

The 3rd Annual African American Male Achievement Conference is being held on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, from 9:00a – 2:00p at Grand Rapids Community College’s Ford Fieldhouse and Applied Tech Center. This year’s theme is: Challenges, Choices and Change. The conference is a partnership between the Urban League of West Michigan, Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Rapids Public Schools and Grand Valley State University. The speakers will present in a “TED Talk” style. They include: Alvin Hills, IV of Endless Opportunities, Parris McMurray of Grand Rapids Public Schools, Cole Williams of Cole Speaks, Dr. Bill Pink of Grand Rapids Community College, Larry Johnson of
Grand Rapids Public Schools, and Jon Covington of 97.3 FM – The Beat.

Superintendent Neal Announces Listening Tour as Part of the Transformation Plan Update

Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal is embarking on a listening tour for the next phase of the Transformation Plan. Students, parents, staff and community members are invited to attend and provide their feedback on four questions:

What is working?
What is not working?
What are the barriers?
What are suggested solutions?

Heart of West Michigan United Way & GRPS Partner Provide STEM Curriculum to Middle School Students

WHAT:           Thanks to the support of Heart of West Michigan United Way, Grand Rapids Public Schools is investing in a new, comprehensive science curriculum PK- 12.  United Way funding specially went to the middle school portion with emphasis on improving student outcomes on state assessments.  Media will have the opportunity to meet with the organizations’ leaders, Westwood Middle School Principal, science teachers and students to see how the curriculum is being used in the classrooms.

GRPS Releases Superintendent Survey

The Grand Rapids Board of Education is in the process of conducting its annual evaluation of the Superintendent.  As part of that process, the Board is surveying GRPS employees, parents and community members. The result of this survey will be an important part of the Superintendent’s evaluation.

Area Hospitals and Public Health Officials Remind Community of Flu Precautions


SITUATION:
As the Centers for Disease Control, or CDC, reports, flu is now widespread throughout Michigan and many surrounding states. Area hospitals, urgent care facilities and doctor offices are experiencing an increase in the number of people presenting with flu and flu-like symptoms. It is important for our community to know how to prevent flu, when to seek care and where to seek care. Although the flu shot does not always prevent the flu, it can lessen the severity and duration. There is still time to get the flu shot if you have not done so already.
